The Open 46 was designed by one of France's most renowned designers, Marc Lombard, who has an enviable record for designing top long-distance racing yachts and well as some of his country's most popular cruising boats.
This is a boat that offers a generous amount of space, equivalent to a respectably-sized apartment, and uses that space in a flexible manner. Sliding doors in the main saloon open entirely to the aft cockpit making it feel luxurious and spacious. Leather upholstery and upgraded finishes complete the feeling of upscale, modern comfort. In the large galley there is an additional Fridge and freezer unit. Throughout the boat there is an impressive volume of easily-accessed storage space, as well as ample room to move around without getting in the way of other people. Four en-suite staterooms with excellent natural light and ventilation will provide accommodation for up to eight guests. The four suites share two full-sized showers which creates far more space in the heads than typically four-cabin boats. The adjoining doors can be locked from both sides to ensure privacy. A single crew berth in the port v-berth provides accommodation for an additional crew member or hired captain.
“Susie Sea” has twin helms, one at the aft end of each hull, to allow for greater visibility when docking on either side. The working lines are run aft inboard of the helm. Directions to crew members assisting with lines can be communicated clearly as your position is more sheltered compared to the more common raised/flybridge helms. While the main socializing areas are at the back of the boat, plenty of cushioned lounging and sunbathing opportunities are found forward on the safety net. Each area has shade – a hardtop bimini aft and a removable sun shade forward.
The designers and builders have worked hard to keep weight to a minimum which helps to keep passage speeds up to good levels. This is certainly a design that in the right conditions ought to reach fast sailing speeds down the Channel and elsewhere. Be prepared to pass other boats often when sailing! Engine power is from the upgraded 50hp Volvo Penta diesels and all on-board electronics are state-of-the-art with B&G Nav screens at both Helms plus large 12” Screen at Nav station.
